Huntsville Chapter DAR History

The Huntsville Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was organized at the Willowbrook Country Club on October 9, 1970, with eight transfer members and fourteen new members. The transfer members were Mrs. William A. Estes, Mrs. David L. Anderson, Mrs. John J. Bell, Mrs. Richard J. Geron, Mrs. Joyce B. Pullen, Mrs. Lawrence Hereford, Mrs. Robert J. Lowe, and Mrs. John Wlodarski. New members were Mrs. Chris E. Hauer, Mrs. Randolph Neal, Mrs. James J. Alden, Mrs. Russell J. Hopping, Mrs. Stephen Fedak, Mrs. Christopher H. Russell, Mrs. Lester H. Sparks, Mrs. J. D. Brookshire, Mrs. Andrew B. Cathey, Sr., Mrs. Richard C. Carter, Mrs. Keith K. Dedrick, Mrs. Arthur P. Davis, Mrs. Dudley Powell, Jr., and Mrs. Eugene Cowart. The chapter currently has one hundred sixteen members. Admission is by invitation. The morning meetings are held the first Thursday of each month, September through May.

The Huntsville Chapter supports the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School at Grant, Alabama, and Tamassee DAR School in South Carolina.  The chapter also supports Berry College in Georgia and Crossnore School in North Carolina.

We were founded in 1890 and our headquarters is in Washington, D.C.  We're a women's volunteer service organization.  As members of a non-profit, non-political organization  dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and  securing America's future through better education for children, DAR members volunteer their time to veterans, award scholarships, and support NSDAR sponsored schools. As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR has chapters all across the United States and internationally. Any woman 18 years or older - regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.
